At Pioneer, we provide a structured, therapeutic, stable environment for young people. Each student is treated as an individual to ensure their needs and requirements are met.
Our education process has activities at it’s core, which is an integrated combination of both academic and vocational studies, as well as important life and social skills. These will be carried with them throughout their time at Pioneer and into adulthood.
Our school is purpose-built ensuring that any anxiety or fear that our young people might have had about school, and the ‘traditional’ education system, are alleviated.
Our curriculum offer is designed around each individuals needs, our students have a great deal of differentiation, below are some examples of curriculum courses we deliver in cooperation with our learners.

New Group Spelling Test (NGST) GL Assessment
The NGST is an adaptive assessment which allows termly monitoring of spelling skills, benchmarked against the national average. When combined with our New Group Reading Test (NGRT).
New Group Reading Test (NGRT) GL Assessment
The NGRT is a standardised, termly assessment that reliably measures reading skills against the national average to help us get to the root of any problems precisely and quickly. The New Group Reading Test comprises three sections: Phonics, Sentence Completion and Passage Comprehension
NGRT provides information about sentence completion and comprehension skills allowing us to identify where difficulties lie. Being a termly assessment allows for regular monitoring of reading progress and measuring the impact of intervention, and a pupil’s reading ability can be benchmarked using the Standardised Age Score (SAS).
The Progress Test in English (PTE), Maths (PTM) and Science (PTS)
These tests enable us to accurately measure how our school and our students are performing – student by student, class by class and year by year.
The tests assess students’ knowledge, understanding and application of technical English skills (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and reading comprehension (using age-appropriate fiction and information texts), helping us to understand current levels of attainment and identify any gaps in learning at both an individual and cohort level.
The Progress Test in Maths & Science provides practical, reliable and independent snapshots in Maths & Science attainment, which can be used to baseline and then to measure in year or year-on-year progress.
These tests will be used at the start of the year for baselining and at the end of the year to measure and track progress.
BASIC KEY SKILLS BUILDER – English, Maths & Digital Skills
BKSB is designed to meet the GCSE and Functional Skills Criteria
There are two key assessments:
The BKSB Initial Assessment, measures basic skills and that will produce a diagnostic assessment which aims to improve skill level of the student. The diagnostic will provide the resources needed to fill the ability gaps identified in Initial Assessment results.
Morrisby Careers
The Morrisby Careers Programme is a suite of 4 components providing a whole-school solution to careers and educational guidance, with a full student management and support system and parental sharing and access.
